The Founding of Post 3272
VFW Post 3272 was organized by World War I Veterans and granted its Charter in November 1945. The Post was named in honor of Gildo T. Consolini, a native son of Avon, Connecticut, who was killed in action in the South Pacific in 1943.
Today, our Post proudly counts 160 veterans who have served in foreign wars — representing every major conflict from World War II through Iraq — and spanning all branches: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
The Origins of the VFW
The Veterans of Foreign Wars traces its roots to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection returned home wounded and sick — with no medical care or pension. They banded together to secure rights and benefits for their service, forming what would become the VFW of the United States.
After chapters formed in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, the movement gained rapid momentum. By 1915, membership reached 5,000; by 1936, it had grown to nearly 200,000 members nationwide.
Standing Strong Through the Depression & WWII
Fighting for Veterans
During the Depression, the VFW petitioned the government to secure federal funding for struggling veterans. When the government moved to cut benefits, President Roosevelt sided with veterans' organizations and restored critical support.
Community & Neutrality
Throughout the 1930s, the VFW championed community service. The organization initially opposed U.S. involvement in foreign wars — veterans knew the cost of war firsthand. But when World War II became unavoidable, the VFW fully backed every soldier going off to fight.

Based on a comprehensive study conducted for our 60th Anniversary in 2005 and updated in 2009. The first collection of 50 histories was presented to the Avon Historical Society in 2008, with ongoing additions to recognize the wartime service and sacrifice of our veterans. We have completed over 200 Service Histories and counting.
Community Service & Recognition
Post 3272 is the largest and most active VFW Post in the Farmington Valley. The Avon Chamber of Commerce honored us with its 2003 Public Service Award for decades of community service.
Memorial Day Parade
Organizing Avon's annual Memorial Day Parade and building the Avon Veterans Memorial.
Youth Programs
Conducting Voice of Democracy & Patriot Pen student essay contests and honoring local teachers.
Veteran Support
Visiting hospitalized veterans, serving as Honor Guards at funerals, decorating veterans' graves, and supporting our Relief Fund for local, national, and deployed Connecticut veterans.
Awards & Recognition
Our monthly Post Newsletter has been recognized as the best in Connecticut by the Department of Connecticut VFW, and we have been designated an "All State Post" multiple times.
